Maple Leaf Hospital founded in response to the devastating 1905 earthquake in Kangra for the most vulnerable women and children

On 4th April, 1905, an earthquake occurred in the Kangra region of the Punjab Province (modern day Himachal Pradesh) in mid-Himalayas of India. The earthquake measured 7.8 on the surface wave magnitude scale and killed more than 20,000 people and 50,000 milch animals. Apart from this, 50,000 buildings including in the towns of Kangra, Mcleodganj and Dharamshala were destroyed or severely damaged..

 

On 5th April 1905, Lady Hon Florence Mary Macnaghten, who was at that time in Amritsar set on foot from Amritsar to Kangra on a 230 kms to be a medical relief work volunteer. She had felt that being a registered nurse she could contribute and make a difference. After days of walking and trekking along the river Beas and its tributaries, she reached Kangra and restored part of an old khudd ward clinic along with the help of a local lady Shanti Devi and few volunteers. She nursed and ministered the sick and suffering.

After weeks of medical and relief work, she went around to visit nearby places and found that there were a very high rate of cases of nutritional deficiencies and goitre amongst women, along with a high rate of maternal and infant mortality.

She was requested by a many a locals sought her to stay put for longer and to bring more doctors and health services to the region. Ms Florence vowed to stay put in Kangra and improve the medical facilities.

1935
Maple Leaf Hospital sets up a ‘Community Outreach Program’ in response to the increasing spread of Leprosy and Tuberculosis for most vulnerable and less aware rural population
Dr Constance V Jackson handed over the charge to Dr Florence Joyce Haslam, the daughter of the Maple Leaf Hospital in 1935 and sets up a mobile clinic in a van to go around to rural areas for health education to prevention of diseases and for basic primary healthcare.
1957
Maple Leaf Hospital sets up an ‘X-ray unit and Diagnostic Lab’ in response to the increasing demand of the locals with the help of Canadian Consulate aid and support.

1980
Maple Leaf Hospital announces a ‘General Surgery Ward’ in response to the increasing accidents due to more motor vehicles and mechanical industry
One of the wards for women and children was converted into a General Surgery Ward on arrival of Dr PK Rajendra Paul to fill up the local need gaps in healthcare for the poor and needy families.
2020
Maple Leaf Hospital announces a ‘Regional Centre for Geriatrics and Elderly Care’ in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic for most vulnerable elderlies
Down the years, a lot has changed in a century, except the indomitable human spirit for charity and volunteer service against odds in emergency times. We have been at the forefront delivering medical services to needy during COVID-19 times.
