1905 – 1915       :              1st Decade REPORT

The year 2020 came with coronavirus / covid-19 pandemic. The 49-bedded Maple Leaf Hospital at Kangra lacked capacity to be one of the COVID-19 care facility. This hospital was founded with the spirit of human compassion and love for charity and volunteer work in the times of post disaster medical relief for vulnerable groups. However, we instead focussed on elderlies and pregnant women as a lot of them were faced with challenges to avail medical check-ups during the lockdown. With most of our staff being elderly, we reached out for support of other NGOs and volunteers. The local Red Cross and the EduCARE India NGO came forward with the much needful support that we needed to undertake in face of such  a unique emergency.

Through the following months, we facilitated an online ‘Psychosocial Support Services Unit’ for the stuck-up international tourists and the socio-economic migrants from other regions of India. We worked to facilitate delivery of essential necessary medicines and emergency response to elders and women in need. A not for profit community kitchen – SEHAT SEVA Rasoi was set up for the patients and the poor migrants for any emergency needs under SEHAT SEVA initiative of EduCARE India.

We were supported with volunteer resources, materials and money by EduCARE India NGO and its affiliate partners to repair some of our facilities to be COVID-19 ready, if the positive cases were to increase. Additional 60-bedded capacity was spruced up in this endeavour for any future emergency needs of the local Red Cross and the Disaster Management Authority. We are aiming to increase the capacity to 120 beds if the appropriate volunteer and funding support is available.

Dr PK Rajendra oversaw the General Medicine and Surgery Unit, whereas Dr Mrs Nelan Paul was in lead at the Gynaecology and Obstetrics. Mr Harjeet was a special resource person in the Psychosocial Support Unit, while Sh OP Sharma, Secretary Red Cross and local Block Medical Officer, Dr Sanjay Bhardwaj well supported the outreach.

Also, a regional conference was organised and facilitated on the issue of ‘COVID-19 and Special needs of Elderly care in the region’ where it was decided that due to financial constraints, a charitable institution like Maple Leaf Hospital may take the lead in establishing a ‘Regional Centre for Geriatrics and Elderly care’ with support of Red Cross and EduCARE India NGO. This centre will focus to establish not only a specialised Geriatrics medical care facility but also institute research and outreach care programs, especially in emergency times for the elderly in the region.

We continue to develop our capacities with passion and commitment to render needful services to vulnerable individuals and community groups in need. We call upon privileged individuals, families, and institutions to extend us a helping hand in fundraising and volunteer support to help us continue our charity medical mission.

A unique project-based membership drive has been initiated to engage several online and at site volunteers from across the world to help realise the ‘COVID-19 Associated Response for Elderly in Deprivation’ (CARED). We will be engaging them with routine online project consultations, progress bulletins and webinars, and recognise their efforts in our volunteer services wall of honour at the facility.
